stART me up
 is a new art exhibition and mentoring program for kids, developed by local artist James McMillan, in conjunction with the Byron Bay Surf Festival. The purpose of ‘stART me up’ is to give new and emerging young artkids (some very young!) a valuable and real opportunity to hang and expose their art .stART me up, will encourage youth from around Byron Bay, the Northern Rivers and beyond to create artworks in various mediums. It allows young people to join in the activities of the Surf Festival and support the growth of young artists in our community. The event will provide a visual platform for young artists aged 4 through to 18, giving an opportunity to display their works, receive encouragement and have a chance to win a bunch of exciting prizes.
Catagories:
4-8yrs:    size up to A3 and should be on thick grade paper or up to 350 x 350mm canvas
9-13yrs:  size up to A3 and should be on thick grade paper or up to 350 x 350mm canvas
14-18yrs: size up to A3 and should be on thick grade paper or up to 350 x 350mm canvas.

All entrants receive a goodie bag with gifts supplied by Volcom and Early Skateboards
Category winners receive eco friendly paints from EColour Paint Supplies and other goodies...
StART me up major prizes: The 14-18 year category will receive a 6 month artist mentorship  with established artist and surfer James McMillan, there is also an overall ‘Volcom artist prize’: One artists work will be selected to be be a part of the Volcom clothing high-Summer range for early 2012 as a Featured Artist on their range of T-shirts. The winner will also receive 10 tees for his friends once their design is released.

  • $10 entry fee
  • Medium: Paint, draw, spraypaint, photo, collage on thick grade paper or up to 350 x 350mm canvas
  • Entry drop off point 2/9 Marvel St (Mojosurf Shop) Attention your artwork to James McMillan and include your name and age category and registration fee.
  • Artworks can also be submitted on the day; registration at the Youth Centre Gilmore crescent Byron Bay between 9 and 12
The Event ;

  • stARTs at 1pm through till 5pm
  • is at the Byron YAC Youth Activity Centre Gilmore crescent Byron Bay
  • will have Live music from local youth bands
  • Skateboarding safety and awareness talks by skaters from Early Skateboards
  • A Breakdancing contest with Tommy Franklin
  • Hula Hooping classes and workshops
  • Face painting
  • Sausage Sizzle
  • Live Art!

Gumby creator Art Clokey sadly passed away today aged 88, we would like to remember and pay homage to the man that created the cutest character in the stop motion business. Gumby’s ability to enchant generations of children and adults had a mystical quality to it, not to mention the amazing jazz tunes that often accompanied the quirky story lines; which in essence were often a reflection of Clokey's spiritual quest. In the 1970s, Clokey studied Zen Buddhism, traveled to India to study with gurus and experimented with LSD and other drugs, though all of that came long after the creation of Gumby, his son said.....
